#28. How do I add or import my team's codes?

Team Leaders

Audience: Team Owners, Co-Owners, Coaches, and anyone with the
MANAGER role.

Short answer: Open Team CallsEdit Team Calls. You can
add categories and codes one at a time, or click Import from File
to bulk-load from a CSV, Excel, or Word document. Nothing is saved
until you click Save All Changes.

Recommended file format — CSV

A CSV file with a header row and three columns:

Category,Code,Description
Coach Calls (Prior to Game Start),Cowboy,Off-break center runner
Coach Calls (Prior to Game Start),Indian,Off-break snake runner
Generic Calls,5/5,Body count
  • Header row required. First row must include columns named
Category, Code, and Description. The parser also accepts
    Section/Call and Group/Name/Meaning/Definition as
aliases — you don't have to fight your existing template.
  • Description is optional. Leave the cell blank for codes that
don't have one (like "Zone A").
  • Repeated categories can be left blank in column A — every blank
row inherits the category from the most recent non-empty row above.
  • Order matters. Codes show up in the order they appear in the
file. Re-arrange them in your CSV editor and re-import to reorder.

Step-by-step (import)

  1. Download the template — on the editor page, click Download
    CSV Template
. The file is pre-filled with whatever your team
has now (or example rows if you're starting fresh).
  2. Edit it in Excel, Numbers, Google Sheets, or any text editor.
    Add, edit, or remove rows.
  3. Save it as .csv (Excel will warn you about losing formatting
    — say Keep CSV).
  4. Back on the editor page, click Import from File.
  5. Choose your file. The modal switches to a preview showing the
sections and codes the parser found. Verify the count looks right.
  6. Pick Append (add to what's already there) or Replace
(discard everything currently in the editor and use only this
    file).
  7. Click Stage Import. The codes load into the editor — but
    nothing is saved yet.
  8. Review the editor. Edit any rows if needed. Then click Save All
    Changes
    to persist.

Step-by-step (manual)

  1. Open the editor (My Team → Team Calls → Edit Team Calls).
  2. Click + Add Section. Give it a name (e.g., "Coach Calls") and
an optional subtitle (e.g., "(Prior to Game Start)").
  3. Click + Add Call under the section. Type the code name and
description. Toggle the eye icon if you want it hidden from
    players and the quiz.
  4. Repeat. Use the up/down arrows to reorder rows; the move-to
dropdown shifts a code into a different section.
  5. Click Save All Changes.

Other supported file formats

  • Excel (.xlsx) — same column layout as CSV.
  • Word (.docx) — works for documents with bold section headers
followed by numbered or bulleted "Code: meaning" lines (matches
    most coach handouts).
  • Plain text paste — the modal has a textarea below the file
upload. Paste any list and the parser tries to figure it out.

Notes / gotchas

  • Nothing is saved until you click Save All Changes. Imports stage
the data into the editor; the editor is the gatekeeper. If you
navigate away you'll see the "unsaved changes" warning.
  • Replace doesn't delete past quiz attempts — those stay on
player history. The codes themselves are replaced.
  • Hard-deleting a code with quiz history is blocked. If players
have already taken quizzes that referenced a code, the editor will
ask you to deactivate it (eye-off toggle) instead of deleting. The
Delete All Team Calls button (Owner only, in Danger Zone) is
the only way to wipe everything — and it also clears quiz history.
