#13. When does an @-mention actually text the person, and when does it stay silent?

Everyone

Audience: Everyone.

Short answer: An @-mention texts the person only if they have
a verified phone number with Direct Alerts on, they've been
inactive in that room for 15+ minutes, and they haven't
already been texted from that room in the last 30 minutes.
Otherwise the mention only shows in the chat (no SMS).

How to @-mention

Type @ and start typing the person's name. The platform resolves
the tag against room members in this priority order:

  1. Their display name (exact match).
  2. Their first + last name.
  3. First name only — but only if the first name is unique in
    that room.
  4. Username as a final fallback.

If nothing matches, the tag is treated as plain text (no mention,
no SMS).

Why your mention might not have texted them

The SMS goes out only if all of these are true:

  • The mentioned user has Direct Alerts enabled under their
    chat settings (default: on).
  • Their phone is verified (see FAQ #8).
  • Their last_read_at for that room is more than 15 minutes
old (i.e. they're "stepped away" — red presence dot territory).
  • They haven't already received an alert from this room in the
last 30 minutes (per-room rate limit so a flurry of mentions
doesn't become a flurry of texts).

What the SMS looks like

TPN: {sender} mentioned you in {team} chat: "{first 100 chars of
message}…" — open the app to reply.

Notes / gotchas

  • Mentioning yourself never texts.
  • The "15 minutes" check uses the room-level last-read timestamp
shown in the live presence dot next to each member's name (green
    <5min, yellow 5–15min, red >15min).
  • Turning off Direct Alerts under chat settings stops SMS without
having to opt out of all platform texts.

Video

  • File: videos/13-mention-sms.mp4 (to be recorded)
  • Suggested length: 45–60 seconds
  • Suggested script:
    1. Type @ in chat, show member picker resolving by display name
    (10s)
    2. Send mention — recipient is online (green dot): no SMS (5s)
    3. Recipient steps away >15 min — second mention triggers SMS
    (15s)
    4. Mention them again 5 minutes later — no second SMS (rate
    limit) (10s)
    5. Show Direct Alerts toggle in chat settings (5s)
