#12. How do I pin and unpin chat messages?

Everyone

Audience: Everyone.

Short answer: Hover or long-press a message and tap the pin icon.
A Pinned badge appears on the message and the pin button at the
top of the chat
opens a side panel listing every pinned message.
Tap the pin again to unpin.

Step-by-step (web)

  1. Hover over a message — message actions appear on the right.
  2. Click the pin icon. The message gets a Pinned badge.
  3. To see all pins, click the pin icon at the top of the chat.
  4. To unpin, click the (now filled-in) pin on the message — or use
the unpin control in the Pinned Messages side panel.

Step-by-step (mobile)

  1. Long-press a message.
  2. Tap Pin from the action menu.
  3. Tap 📌 PINNED MESSAGES at the top of the chat to see the list.
  4. Long-press a pinned message and tap Unpin (or tap the pin
    icon again).

What gets pinned how

  • Text messages: show as the message body in the pinned panel.
  • Images: show as a clickable thumbnail. Tap to open full-size in
a new tab (or full-screen viewer on mobile). Image-only pins used
to render as blank cards — that's fixed.
  • File attachments: show as a download link.
  • GIFs / Giphy URLs: render the inline preview.

Notes / gotchas

  • Errors are visible now. If you don't have permission to pin
in a particular room (or the action fails), you'll see a clear
message instead of the pin silently failing.
  • Pins persist across web and mobile in real time — pinning on
one device updates the other immediately.
  • Unpinning doesn't delete the message; it just removes it from the
    pinned panel.
